A strong and independent woman left this life quite unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, with the passing of Muriel Parsons Poulin, age 81, from a massive heart attack.

Born on August 29, 1932, in Boston, MA, Muriel grew up in Conway with her parents, Howard and Margaret (Lowrie) Parsons. She attended public school in Conway and graduated in 1952 from Bay Path Junior College in Longmeadow with an AS degree in Executive Secretarial Science. Her early career in the 1950’s included working as an executive secretary for the CIA in Washington DC. She returned to Conway in 1958 to care for her aging parents, where she met and then married her former husband, Roger C. Poulin, in 1961. As a young mother with two small children, Muriel worked at home as a seamstress and thesis transcriptionist for PhD students at Smith College and other schools in the area. This experience led to her working as an executive secretary at the School for Social Work, where she was employed for 29 years prior to retiring in the mid-90’s. Throughout her career, she also transcribed and edited academic textbooks for professors at Smith College. Upon retiring from Smith, Muriel started a transcription/editing business, which served many of the area colleges and hospitals.

Muriel’s passions were many; she was an avid reader; she was a pilot and member of the Franklin County Flying Club and participated in Massachusetts Wing (a civil air patrol) activities and events. She co-owned and flew a Culver V two-seat monoplane in the late-50’s. She loved to parachute and do mechanical work on her ’54 Chevy, of which she was very proud. Muriel loved to sing in Cabaret, adored opera, Celtic and classical music, and Broadway musicals. Her volunteer activities included staffing bingo and bake sales at a local church, working with Urban Wildlife with her daughter, tutoring MBA students in writing, and volunteering for the Parsons Family Association. Muriel was devoted to her family and to those that she loved. There are no words to describe the impact of Muriel’s loss, but if we are to remember anything about her, let it be that she was a formidable, intelligent, forthright woman who lived life to the fullest and surrounded herself with people who had her level of passion and zest for life.

Muriel leaves behind her children, Kimberly Graham (Don) of Conway, Melinda Maziarz (Tom) of Hadley, Charles Patnode (Barbie) of Phelps, NY, Michelle Bates (Tom) of Wells, VT, Laurie Benoit (Barry Del Castilho) of Buckland, and Kevin Poulin of Davenport, Iowa. She is also survived by 10 beloved grandchildren and 10 precious great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Margaret Parsons, and her dearly loved grandson, Robert R. Benoit, Jr., in November 2013. Muriel also leaves behind countless loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends, all of whom were like family to her. She was especially close to her sister-in-law, Rachel Kirouac, whom she thought of as a true sister.

Lucille was spiritually born again on December 13, 2009 after which she loved going to church to hear God's word and to sing. Her favorite Bible verse was Psalm 143:10, "Teach me to do Thy will; For Thou art my God: Thy Spirit is good; Lead me into the land of uprightness". She will be 'sorely' missed by her family, church family and friends. Words are completely inadequate to express just how deeply she was loved! Her children are William E.
